WCCO Radio: Present Your Best for Interviews

Monday, December 28th, 2009

It was fun to share presentation advice on WCCO Radio this afternoon with my former colleagues Bruce Hagevik and Eric Eskola.  They asked me to give tips to job seekers who want to present their best.  www.wccoradio.com

Thought I’d sum up the 5-minute interview here.  I suggest you think about three areas when preparing for a job interview:  Image, Vocal Behavior, Social Media/Online Personality.  Do you have focus and intent in each area?  Are you unique and polished?

For your image, make sure you consider your body language and eye contact.  You want to think about your face, hair, and wardrobe.  Your vocal behavior can help you or hurt you.  Is it strong or weak?  Do you need to get some professional help to make it more powerful?  Avoid sugary foods and dairy products before a big interview.  They glom up your voice box.

And these days, most employers will wonder if you are involved in social media and how you use it.  Less is more strategies help here…be sure to pick social media outlets that match your personality and your business purpose.  Avoid doing too many and not upkeeping them well.  Watch out if you blend social news of your life with any business purpose.  Importantly for all business reasons, make sure your photos flatter you.  They send messages about you too.  Once they’re online, they live on.

“Always aim for achievement and forget about success.” — Helen Hayes

I saw this and thought yes, good words for 2010 and beyond.

Tip of the Day: Make Someone’s Day

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

I recently got a call from my contact lens guy who’s also become like an uncle to me.  He called to say he was thinking of me and wanted to wish me a happy holiday season.

His small gesture made my day.  And it made me think how something so simple might actually be pretty huge, special, and important to someone else.  So go ahead, make their day.

Whether it’s with a quick e-mail, a phone call, or even a handwritten letter.  You decide what works for you.  Your time is really the most valuable thing you give to someone else, so people appreciate when someone else takes time for them.

Client Spotlight: Today Show Appearance

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Congratulations to client Jessica Walton of Imation in St Paul.  She appeared on NBC’s Today Show Tuesday morning to personally represent Imation.

The company and its employees donated more than 100,000 consumer electronics from its Memorex line to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.  It was my honor to prep her for the appearance.  I was happy to see her eye popping green scarf and smiling face.  http://today.msnbc.msn.com/

Take-away tip:  When you know you’ll only get a short amount of time for a fun segment like Jessica’s (60 seconds max), focus on showcasing warmth and personality.  Doing that will give your company the best promotion possible.

Be My Guest

Monday, December 14th, 2009

The Guest Blog feature on Roshini’s Blog this year is a new addition.  I’ve loved reading what my Guest Bloggers have to say and learning from their expertise.

The feature will continue in 2010.  To that end, I invite you to be a Guest Blogger next year.  I’m looking for Guests for April through December 2010.   The requirements are fairly simple after I approve you for a certain month:  200 words or shorter; e-mail me your Guest Blog by the 25th of the previous month; and be open to minor editing.  The topic is your choice, but I ask that you think about how you can help my readers present their best with useful information from your area of expertise.  See the Guest Blog Archives to the bottom right of this page for contributors in 2009.

If interested, please send an e-mail with your name, topic, and Web address:  roshini@roshinimedia.com.
