Calm Down and WOW!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

The easiest thing you can do to get yourself in position for a great presentation moment is to work on your calm.

Powerful performance happens when we are in a relaxed state and in control of our bodies, minds, and our content.  So if you have a few minutes before show time, do not spend it busily looking through your notes.  At that point, you should know your stuff.  Do some vocal exercises, take some deep breaths, and visualize a WOW! moment.

Sales Experiment

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I was invited to hear sales and customer service expert Hal Becker speak when he was in Minneapolis this week.  I like hearing/seeing other keynote speakers not only for their content but also to check out their presentation style.

I won’t get into elements of his style here, but I will say he made some interesting comments about how to sell better.  In many ways, all of us are salespeople.  You don’t need to be a business owner or have sales in your title to be a seller of things, of services, of yourself.  But the one thing Hal said that I am going to make my personal sales experiement is this:  Don’t leave phone messages.

Hmmm, I thought.  But when you consider his reasoning, it’s sound.  Think about all the messages you receive in a business day.  Which ones do you return first?  Are they really the ones from someone who isn’t your vendor, perhaps even someone you don’t even know who wants to sell something to you?  Probably not.  So I’m going to make it a mission for the next few weeks to figure out if there are people in my roster of calls with whom I should NOT leave a message.  Rather, Hal suggests you keep phoning them until you reach them.

I invite you to let me know what you think about Hal’s advice and whether you try this sales experiment.  E-mail me:  roshini@roshinimedia.com.  I’d like to find out if Less truly is More in this case.

Gloria Steinem in Minneapolis

Monday, June 15th, 2009

She’s an American icon.  She’s an uber star.  She’ll be in Minneapolis for the WomenWinning Annual Luncheon today.  I will host the Roshini Multi Media table with some superstar guests of my own.

Media buddies Mick Anselmo from CBS Radio Minneapolis and Nichole Brabbit from Twin Cities Luxury + Fashion will join me at the RMM table.  Clients Kelley Swenson of RBC Wealth Management, Barbara Brown of Meagher & Geer, Ann Ruff of CommonBond, and Roshan Rajkumar of Bowman and Brooke will add to the merriment.  Super Girl Power women Kate Kelly of Minnesota Bank & Trust and Sarah Strickland of Cincinnatus will add their class to this high-energy gang.

In keeping with this year’s theme:  Sharing the Torch-Generations of Women Winning…my mother and personal hero Concy Rajkumar of Concy’s Montessori will grace us with her presence.

I’m so thrilled about this event and elated to share a table and a room with such WOW!

Look Good while you Save Money

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

In response to a business journalist wondering how people can look good without spending lots, I came up with a few tips.  Let me share them with you:

Clothing Style:  No matter your spending level, make sure your clothes fit.  You don’t have to shop at Saks to find great clothing.  Deals abound.  Just don’t buy things that are not tailored or have that “one thing wrong with them” feel.  That’s a recipe for looking bad.

Hairdo Style:  Your hair is part of your wardrobe.  You wear it everyday.  There are cost-effective stylists and barbers out there.  Ask around.  Many salons have training programs and allow senior students to cut and color hair at drastically reduced rates.  Check it out before you spend 100s.

Hand Style:  If your hands and nails look bad, that’s a bit of a window to your soul…okay, that’s dramatic.  Keeping your hands looking good and healthy could be as simple as daily hand lotion (any price point) plus trimming nails and cuticles.  NOT biting your nails is also a practical and cost-free beauty tip.  If you must have polish, clear polish from Target or another discount store may be all you need to have nice hands this summer.

Skin Style:  For those bare looks, you want to make sure your skin doesn’t look scaly.  The least expensive I’ve found?  Olay Shea Butter Bar.  It’s smooth, smells good, and makes your skin look runway ready.
