What’s your ready stance?

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Everyone has one.  Even if you don’t know it.  Your ready stance:  How you look when you don’t think anyone’s looking.  What expression is on your face?  Where are your arms?  What are your feet doing?  And most importantly, what does your ready stance say to the world?

As a presentation trainer, I want you to look and sound good whenever you have a presentation moment.  But also remember, part of your presentation personality is how you appear when you’re not talking, when you don’t think you actually have to perform.

A ready stance I’d like to see change is Michelle Obama’s.  She’s a smart, beautiful, and stylish woman.  Unfortunately, she does some strange thing with her mouth when she’s just listening or looking.  It’s even been captured in countless photos.  I suggest she relax her mouth and even figure out if there’s something about her teeth that makes her do this.  A more relaxed ready stance will make her much more First Lady-like.

So next time you’re out, play a little game.  Just look at people as they’re standing in line or walking around.  What is their ready stance?  And does it say ouch?  Or, does it say WOW!?

Everyone’s a Rock Star

Friday, November 14th, 2008

You can get inspiration to present better from everywhere.  You can also just learn about good presentation and not so great by watching others.  Yesterday I spoke to a group of business people in Lakeville, Minnesota.  Prior to taking center stage, however, I tuned in to the various members who got up to give announcements before my keynote.

In my head I took notes about interesting ways each one of them used their own personalities.  Though none of them are professional speakers, they all had some positive things going on.  They also each had some areas they could improve.

On that note, I’m looking forward to seeing the band Coldplay in St. Paul tonight.  I look forward to watching how the musicians perform, how they engage the audience, how they use choreography for pacing.  So even if you’re not a traditional rock star, you can study them to create rock star moments in your own world.

Thanks for accepting our thanks

When I was in TV news, there was one group of people who got me every time.  If you thought kids or pets, not a bad guess.  Especially kids.  Both groups are cute.  Both groups deserve our love.

But the group that made me especially proud to be an American and left me in awe every time I interviewed one or a family member of one:  Veterans.  I rarely was able to leave one of those interviews without getting choked up.

I interviewed some Green Berets at a Special Forces reunion in Kentucky.  I interviewed some of the last surviving vets of World War II in Minneapolis.  I interviewed a guy in Detroit who was trying to lose 48 pounds, so he could join the Marines.  No doubt he made it.

On this Veterans Day, I salute all of them.  Even as I write this, it’s tough not to get choked up.  Thanks for accepting our thanks…it’s nowhere near what we owe you.

Writing on Demand

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

I’m getting ready to hit the road today on an excursion of purpose.  A trip to somewhere that hopefully will take me everywhere.  I am finally making myself sit down and give proper attention to the book I’ve been trying to write all year.  I’m even leaving town and closing myself off from reality in a peaceful setting with a couple friends and my laptop.

When I initially started formally working with my editor, I put myself on a fast-paced deadline to get the first draft done by Thanksgiving.  But my favorite holiday will come and go without that accomplishment.  Unless perhaps I do not sleep at all.

I share this because even when you’re on a mission to help everyone out there get more comfortable with something you’re passionate about, you must learn how to give yourself a break.  Perhaps that’s the best presentation tip I could give.  Just relax and realize there’s a time for everything.  That just might be the best inspiration for moving something along more quickly than you could do on a ridiculous deadline.

So wish me luck.  Send positive vibes.  And feel free to share any of your presentation questions or success stories.  Maybe they’ll show up in the book.  And perhaps they’ll help me get somewhere.

Vote

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Originally, I was going to blog about my excitement for Election Day…encourage you to vote…take a friend to the polls kind of a thing.

Now, I’d like to go one step further.  Call it the reporter in me.  I’ve cleared my business calendar to cover Election Day for my station, WCCO Radio in Minneapolis.  I’d love to hear from you.  Mainly because it will make my reports better.

Text me any thoughts you care to share.  Feel free to let me know about any interesting elements you see at your polling place.  If it’s in my area, I’ll go there.  Here are the digits:  612.910.0826.

Happy Election Day.
