Speeching

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

As a political junkie and presentation trainer, the national political conventions are like my version of the Superbowl.

Here are my quick numbers on how some of the speech givers did this week…on a 10 scale:

Michelle Obama = 7.5

Hillary Clinton = 9.5

Bill Clinton = 5

Joseph Biden = 8

Michelle, Hillary, and Joe all appeared natural in their own skin.  Authenticity is one of the keys to a successful presentation moment.  The former president had a lot to pull off and prove, in light of past successful outings.  Unfortunately, he seemed like he was phoning it in.  If you ever feel that way, I suggest you figure out a way to have an attitude change or pass on the national spotlight.  I look forward to Barack Obama’s address tonight and the Republicans next week.

Scouting Surprises

Monday, August 25th, 2008

The Republican National Convention starts next week in St. Paul.  As a political junkie, I’m excited.  I’ve cleared most of my client calendar to focus on being a journalist for a week.  To that end, I took a scouting trip to St. Paul yesterday to check out the area…and had some pleasant surprises.

I want to be comfortable with all my walking trails and important connections.  A friend is allowing me to stay in her downtown apartment, so I can have easy access to the Convention space.  We drove the different paths I will walk next week.  Of course no scouting trip is done until you end up at a rooftop establishment for a bit of food and perhaps a lively drink.  What a lunch time it was.  I ended up making friends with some key inside people during this lunch hour.  To protect them, I won’t mention names or cocktail choices.

The important lesson here is the affirmation of my journalistic insight.  There are stories everywhere.  There are sources everywhere, plus all the places in between.  And there’s nothing like hitting the streets before a big event to make sure you’ve got some bases covered.  I found some good point people for my work next week and some ideas for stories I might not have known about had I not walked in store fronts and talked with people.  That’s a lesson I hope my students take in as a couple of them intern for CBS during the Convention and my clients remember as they pitch their stories to the media.

I’ll be talking with you from the airwaves and look forward to sharing the things I uncover during my live reports.  Feel free to listen to the WCCO Radio Team on 830 AM in the Twin Cities and surrounding states or online at wccoradio.com.

Morning People

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

If you’re gonna be up and on the radio from 1 to 5 in the morning, you might as well make sure you have something to talk about.  This morning I had my second day in a row of guest hosting the Al Malmberg Show on WCCO Radio.  It was a blast.  But it wouldn’t have been nearly as fun for me if I didn’t have some interesting people to help keep me awake and share information with our listeners.

Thanks to Debra from The Party Line band and Michelle MacDonald of MacDonald Law Firm for coming in-studio on Monday’s show.  And a big thanks to former Minnesota Twin and co-owner of the Hit Zone Jamie Ogden and Bob McClain of WordsmithBob.com for hanging with me this morning.  Plus, thanks to Mike Leonard of Oak Ridge Financial for getting up early in Kansas City to join me live on the phone to talk finances and getting wealthy in a down market.  The men of Minneapolis Comedy Death Squad hung with me for an hour this morning, which flew by.  Never thought I’d be talking comedy at 3 in the morning when I joined the team at WCCO Radio last year.

I learned so much.  Thank you to all and to all a good night…I need to go nap.

Ya Gotta Love Radio

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Had a blast guest hosting The Al Malmberg Show on WCCO Radio Monday morning.  Tune in Tuesday morning and give us a call.

I’ll talk with a former Minnesota Twin about life after pro sports.  Listeners will get some insider tips to wealth.  Three comedians will laugh up the studio.  And we might even get another debate over Brett Favre becoming a Viking.

Listen live on 830 AM or on wccoradio.com.
